The Lufthansa Group is looking to order a total of 80 new aircraft, with planes from planemakers Boeing, Airbus and Embraer all under consideration.
According to German website aeroTELEGRAPH, the Group’s Chief Executive (CEO) Carsten Spohr confirmed news of the prospective order during an internal call with employees in October 2023.
Spohr expressed an interest in the Airbus A220 and the Embraer E2 series for short-haul operations.
It is understood the order would be for 40 aircraft, all of which would be earmarked for Lufthansa’s new carrier City Airlines, which launches in 2024.
During the call, Spohr went on to say that the Group is looking at a further 40 medium-haul jets, with aircraft from the Airbus A320neo and the Boeing 737 MAX possible options.
As yet, these new medium-haul jets are not thought to have been allocated to any specific airline within the Lufthansa Group.
Also during a media conference on November 2, 2023,, Spohr confirmed that, in the summer of 2024, its first long-haul flight will operate with the new Allegris first-class cabins onboard. Lufthansa will also launch its new economy, premium economy and business class seating.
Spohr went on to add that Lufthansa will be opening its new lounge in Terminal 6 at John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK).
