JetBlue E190’s close call with Learjet 60 in Boston: report

In February 2023, a JetBlue Embraer E190 was forced to abort its landing in Boston as it narrowly avoided colliding with a departing Learjet 60. A recent investigation has now revealed that the incident was caused by the dangerous move made by the crew of the business jet involved in the near-collision.

The JetBlue Embraer 190, arriving from Nashville on February 27, 2023, was about to touch down when its pilots had to take “evasive action” and initiate a go-around to avoid the potential collision with the Learjet 60.

The United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an investigation and determined that the Hop-a-Jet flight crew was responsible for the incident due to taking off without proper clearance, leading to a conflict with the JetBlue flight, which had already been cleared to land on the intersecting runway.

According to the NTSB report issued on August 3, 2023, the closest proximity between the two airplanes occurred when the JetBlue flight was about 30 feet (9 meters) above ground level during the landing flare.

A video taken from the observer seat in the JetBlue flight deck captured the moment when the Learjet crossed the runway in front of the landing Embraer 190.
