The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a near miss between a Cessna Citation 560X private jet and a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 at San Diego Airport (SAN) in the United States (US).
In a preliminary review by the FAA, it was found that shortly before midday on Friday. August 11, 2023, the private jet was cleared to land on Runway 27.
However, at the same time Southwest Airlines Flight 2493, had been given permission to taxi onto the same runway by air traffic control.
Thankfully the airport’s automated surface surveillance system was alerted, and the Cessna flight crew were immediately instructed to discontinue its landing.
According to Reuters, a person briefed on the incident said that an initial review shows the Cessna flew above the Southwest jet by about 100 feet.
“NTSB investigating Aug. 11 runway incursion and overflight at San Diego Int’l Airport that occurred when a Cessna 560X was cleared to land on Runway 27 and conflicted with a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 which was in a line up & wait on Runway 27. No injuries or damage reported,” the National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement.
